Common Flame Retardants for PU Foam

• Halogenated flame retardants (e.g., chlorinated or brominated compounds) – effective but increasingly restricted due to environmental concerns.

• Phosphorus-based flame retardants (e.g., tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate [TCPP], tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate [TDCPP], ammonium polyphosphate) – widely used in flexible PU foams.

• Nitrogen-based flame retardants (e.g., melamine, melamine cyanurate) – often used in combination with phosphorus compounds for synergistic effects.

• Mineral fillers (e.g., aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide) – act physically by releasing water and cooling the foam.
